WOOD-PLASTIC COMPOSITES: Recycled, Lumber Of The Future.
Wood-plastic composites are one of the most dynamic sectors of today's Plastic / Wood industry. Although the technology is not new, there is growing interest in the new design possibilities that this dynamically stable material offers.
Consider these facts:
  • Plastic takes upto 5000 years to degrade in landfill.
  • Trees need at least a minimum decade to reach its full growth.
Thanks to Wood Plastic Composite, Industrial logging can be minimized and plastic waste management can be improved, there by contributing to the green revolution.
What Are Wood Plastic Composites?
Industrial logging of the world's primary forests is rapidly destroying the habitats of thousands of animal and plant species, and depleting our planet of its oxygen reserves. The situation today is of concern to us all and we desperately need to call a halt to the destructive exploitation of hardwoods responsible for this widespread deforestation. Solutions to the problems do exist. Where green awareness is firmly instilled in popular culture - an engineering company invented and developed a substitute for wood made from softwood & hardwood waste and recycled polymer resins, by way of Wood Plastic Composites. WPC Finished products are completely recyclable even after many years of use.
This new material had the appearance and qualities of the rarest species of wood while offering a truly eco-friendly alternative, and met with instant success. Wood Plastic composite today holds 60% market share in architectural landscaping in the public and private construction sectors. The manufacturing technology has to be so finely tuned and intricately controlled; both know-how and accumulated experience are keys to the fabrication of a highly quality, resilient Wood Plastic Composite. Nonetheless, in today's construction sector there are some very competitive solutions that fulfill green criteria.
Wood Plastic Composites are processed lumber or timber made out of recycled plastic and wood wastes. It is a non-polluting material that replaces the application of real wood.
Wood Plastic Composites are a group of materials that have been developed and refined over the past 12 years that are now generating high levels of global interest. Over recent years, the market has exploded with demand for a new generation of high performance products, with the added benefit that they are manufactured predominantly from post consumer recycled HDPE plastic and timber.
What Are The Practical Uses Of Wood Plastic Composites?
Wood Plastic Composites are extremely versatile and can be used in many applications such as Commercial, Sports and Recreation, Agricultural, Mining, Civil Defense, Portable Housing, Marine Structure, Residential, Decking, Square & Rectangle profiles, Park furniture, Bollards, Post & Rail Systems, Signage, Screening, Bin Retention, Vineyard posts, Sheeting, Fence Plinth, Parking Aid and others.
What Are The Benefits Of Wood Plastic Composites?
WPCs can produce the final shape through extrusion processing. This maximizes resource efficiency and gives design flexibility for improved fastening, stiffening, and reinforcement, finishing and joining. Wood Plastic Composites are like wood products - They need no further processing. WPCs are weather, water and mild resistant for outdoor applications where untreated or chemically treated timber products are unsuitable. WPCs are plastic products with exceptional environmental credential and performance.
  • They are true hybrid materials and combine best properties of both wood and plastic products.
  • They use low cost and plentiful raw materials - wood waste and recycle plastics become assets instead of liabilities.
  • They are competitively priced and are competitive with traditional materials.
  • They are easily fabricated using traditional wood processing techniques and the same tools.
  • They are available in a broad range of finishes and appearance.
What Are The Properties Of Wood Plastic Composites?
WPCs are true composite materials and have properties of both materials. They have stiffness and strength between those for plastic or wood, but the density is generally higher than either. The properties of Wood Plastic Composites come directly from their structure: they are intimate mixes of wood particles and plastic. The plastic effectively coats/encases the wood particle as a thin layer. The high moisture resistance of WPCs (water absorption of 0.7% compared to 17.2% for pine) is a direct result of this structure. Water can only be absorbed into the exposed sections of wood and is not transmitted across the plastic boundaries. They result is that WPCs are extremely water resistant, have little thickness swell in water and do not suffer from fungal or insect attack.
Wood Plastic Composites have:
  • Good Stiffness and impact resistance.
  • Dimensional stability.
  • Resistance to rot.
  • Excellent thermal properties.
  • Very low moisture absorption.
Wood Plastic Composites And The Environment
One of the main reasons for using WPCs is environmental. The environmental pressures on industry in terms of recycling and sustainability are growing daily. There is a clear need to extend the life of traditional building materials such as wood. This resource efficiently uses materials that are currently seen as waste and supports the urgent concept of sustainable development. For users of plastic products there is a need to reduce the dependence on petrochemicals with their rising and cyclical raw material costs. For users of wood products there is a need to improve the recourse efficiency and to recyle the raw materials waste that inevitably occurs. Wood Plastic Composites increase the efficiency of wood usage by up to 40% compared to traditional wood processing.
Further environmental benefits of WPCs include:
  • There is negligible waste and anything that is produced is reused.
  • WPCs contain no toxins or volatile organic compounds.
  • WPCs are recyclable and can be reground and reused after their service life.
  • WPCs are considered non-hazardous waste and can be disposed of by standard methods.
The basic material structure of WPC means that leaching from WPCs is non-existent.

Wood Plastic Composite : is a natural choice of " Al Qawarib " in " United Arab Emirates " - called the
" Emirates "
and the land of the " Arabian Gulf ". Having been in timber and wood industry for more than 3 decades," Al Qawarib " came up with an idea of setting up a Wood Plastic Composite Industry being the first of its kind in the United Arab Emirates " Al Qawarib " has great plans to have a number of parks and gardens with architectural features made of wood plastic composite material. Eventually " Al Qawarib " will be in the process of having a tie up with the municipalities of all the 7 Emirates and also in the oil field industry.
The majority of outdoor constructions will now make use of this ultra-modern material, designed and produced in the purest respect for Arab traditions. Manufactured from recycled wood fibers and resins, and designed to put human and nature into harmony, it offers superior physical and mechanical properties to those of hardwood. For the Arabian Culture, this represents a golden opportunity to opt for a green solution and at the same time reap the benefits of a high-quality, long lasting and hardwearing product. Wood Plastic Composite has been a natural choice in UAE for some years now, and it will represent 60% of the market for public and private outdoor landscaping.
The real alternative to exotic hardwoods exposed to the elements, the lifecycle of wood, whether soft or hardwood, is limited. Wood is vulnerable to UV radiation, humidity, fungal growth or insect attack, and requires regular treatment to delay greying, splitting, splintering or the spread of rot. Wood plastic composite provides an appealing alternative: rot proof and durable, it is guaranteed splinter-free and
non-slip, it will not split or crack, and is resistant to insects and fungal infection. High-quality products which we call now as AQWOOD keep their original colour. The functional ingredients used, and the technical characteristics of the end product, guarantee unrivalled performance and durability. Unlike wood, the manufacture of AQWOOD board or pofiles does not require trees to be felled, and subsequent processing causing secondary pollution is unnecessary. Manufactured exclusively from recycled wood, and with the look and feel of natural hardwood,AQWOOD today offers a viable alternative to exploiting the equatorial rainforests.
Wood Plastic Composite product was designed to protect the environment, a board or profile in wood plastic composite is ecologically sound. The wood fibers are mainly recycled hardwood as we are saw millers of Hardwood. The resin component - recycled polypropylene - is a fully recyclable, environmentally-neutral plastic, widely recognized as a non-toxic substance. These raw materials - both wood and plastic - are all sourced from the recycling industry, and using them ultimately means saving many valuable, and environmentally costly 'noble' materials. All of the AQWOOD inputs are scrupulously examined and declared to be completely free of toxic substances before processing AQWOOD composition is free of all solvents and chlorides: it will never release formaldehyde gases, and this means it is easily recycled itself, and is not harmful to human health. So each stage in the manufacture of AQWOOD wood plastic composite fully complies with sustainable development criteria.
Durability : An Essential Quality. Weather Resistant.
AQWOOD is used in very diverse climates, and under difficult conditions where exposure to extreme heat and sunshine, or constant humidity, are the norm. Its resistance to extreme climatic conditions explains its success throughout United Arab Emirates. AQWOOD is guaranteed to withstand huge differences in temperature and humidity. Its resistance to the effects of the sun has been rigorously tested in the laboratory, but the product's stability under harsh conditions is also demonstrated by the lasting attractiveness of installations built in the tropics, which are subject to far longer and more intense periods of sunshine. While hardwood will gradually succumb over time to weathering and hostile outdoor conditions, theAQWOOD extrusion process used in the manufacture condenses the material irreversibly. The subtle intricacies of the technology and the resins used form a perfect adhesive, without the addition of any glue or solvent. More compact than competitor products on the market, AQWOOD remains water-repellent and extremely dense, so preventing humidity from penetrating its interior. The boards will retain all their special properties indefinitely, and will not split, go grey or undergo damage as a result of extreme cold or heat. They will not be blighted by unsightly growths of moss or lichen, which make traditional decking or swimming pool surrounds dangerously slippery in, or just after, wet weather.AQWOOD has the advantage of being colored throughout its mass. The pigments and anti-UV agents impregnated during the manufacturing process continue to be effective in protecting the material from discoloration for decades, without the need for any maintenance or treatment. The boards have all the warmth and beauty of exotic wood, even when seen at close quarters. Warm in appearance, AQWOOD is soft to the touch, and closely resembles wood. Slightly granular in texture, and protected by an exclusive surface treatment, the risk of slipping and falling is greatly reduced, even when the boards are wet. Impervious to water, and invulnerable to insects or fungi that feed on wood, AQWOOD has a ten-year limited warranty against rot, termites, splintering or cracking.
Easy To Install
AQWOOD is very easy to install: the calibrated boards, accessories and fixing clips reduce laying times to half those required when installing hardwood decking or support structures. Using standard tools, even the most inexperienced installer can produce straight, neat cuts without splintering. The boards are supplied with an ingenious system of invisible clips for easy laying and rapid dismantling, (if required) minimizing the number of screws needed. These clip fasteners allow the structure to expand and shrink while maintaining firm but elastic contact between the boards and their supporting structure. The stainless steel screws we strongly recommend are black.
Minimal Maintenance
Guaranteed knot-free, splinter-free, warp-free and with its invisible fixing system, AQWOOD offers a safe, non-slip surface. The grained surface of the boards offers exceptional adherence. It requires no special maintenance and is easily cleaned using a high-pressure water jet or hose. The boards can be worked and sanded just like wood, but the toxic treatments and polyurethane varnish needed to maintain natural wood are totally superfluous. Accidental spills or stains can be removed, and the original surface restored by sanding lightly with a fine-grade sandpaper.
